Landscaping is well worth the effort. The results are so pleasing to the eye. Planning is essential to meet your expectations. You do not have to generate a schedule or develop PERT and Gantt Charts. A simple piece of paper, pencil and tape measure are all you need to get started. We usually start this way. While wandering about your yard, take note of any other items in need of attention. These include items like, fences, gutters, downspouts, etc. Make note of any items requiring attention- we might be able to help!
We like to use computer programs such as Power Point or Visio for three reasons:
1) Both programs can generate background grids, which makes layout scale and area calculations easier, and
2) Changes are easily accommodated
3) The resulting files are easily exchanged with other parties
However, a pencil sketch with dimensions is all that is required. The second stage is much more enjoyable.
Now the fun part comes with selecting your new plantings. The usual suspects of Amazon, Google and Wikipedia can help a lot here. However, finding the plant of your dreams does not ensure it is in stock locally. Local nurseries abound. You will be amazed at how many listed items are out of stock. Take note of the species, and item number. Update your sketch with plant names and locations.
Once your sketch is done, there are a few decisions left:
- Mulch or gravel fill
- Embedded Edging
- Masonry if any
- Budget & Schedule
