Fencing page is under construction . . . coming soon.
The pictures below are from a recently completed fence project. The posts are pressure treated 4 x 4 with 2 x 4 cross members. These posts were set in concrete. The Posts are "Wax Dipped" for better moisture protection. Western cedar was used for the pickets. The Home Owners Association (HOA) mandated 3-1/2" x 6' dimensions. The 8 foot fence sections were made on-site. This allows the contour of the land to be followed, something difficult to do with prefab fence sections. Home Depot and Lowes tend to stock these prefab sections instead of individual pickets. These can work on level fence lines, but they cost more twice of the individual components. And there are still the posts to deal with . . .
This particular job covered 176 linear feet of fence line. The old fence was 17-years old and in rough shape. Wind, rain and solar radiation combine to degrade fences over time. The removed fencing showed signs of dry rot; the pickets came off without a pry bar. The posts were also at the end of their useful life. As always, removing the old posts is the hardest part of the job. Every situation varies. In this case, a jackhammer was required on a few posts. The scrap heap was substantial.
The new posts were set in concrete, trued, and allowed to dry overnight. The next day, the crossmembers were installed and then the pickets. The level sections were finished very quickly. The contoured sections took considerably longer as each picket requires individual trimming. Finally, the posts are trimmed at picket height.
